Giant Bunny Ears
Description: 6 ft tall bunny ears that have a light inside, creating a lantern effect
Philosophical Statement: I have never done an art installation before (I’m an accountant in the default world), but inspired by Burning Man and with the support of people who have the skills, I want to create something for the Recomp. Since moving to Vancouver last year I am surrounded by so many creative people, and I’ve wanted to try something myself. And the Recomp seems like the most open and accepting place I could make my first attempt.
My idea came from our cabin theme, ‘Fur and Loafing’, and the goal was to get giant bunny ears on top of the cabin. Last year we brought tons of bunny ears to give out, and the response was great; people were coming over to ask for them and even wearing them to parties after the Recomp was over. What we learned from that: bunny ears make people hoppy.
Next came the idea of incorporating light, since at Burning Man the playa at night is when much of the art takes a whole new shape. Also last year at the Recomp I noticed people hanging out in front of their cabins at night, and I wanted to turn that into a more creative space. I wanted to create something that would draw people in, something people would want to come have a closer look at. And I would love to talk to people about it, let them know this was the first thing I had ever built, and encourage them to get creative. My hope for this project is to inspire people to create more art in their space, both at the Recomp and at Burning Man.
Plan for the Project: There are only two of us working on the project, but it will be enough to complete it, as well as take it down after the event. We have already spent about 15 hours on the ears and they will be completed a week by the end of the Easter weekend.
Once the Recomp is over, we will take the ears apart for easy transportation out of the site. It will all be taken down Sunday morning, and we will be able to remove it in our own vehicle. We plan to reuse some of the PVC if possible for other projects. Since we are also working on the building of the Man in the same space as the ears (our studio), we have requested transportation for the ears at the same time the Man is picked up.
