Philosophical Statement

The mission of Disaster Area is to make fire art accessible to everyone. The primal response that grips
the viewer when they are actually operating fire art themselves is a viable goal in itself, but ultimately my goal
as an artist is to inspire or even create life long memories in the viewers. To do this, Disaster Area is bringing
the Fire Playground: several small interactive flame effects, several small demonstration effects, and one larger
demonstration flame effect called the Pillar of Creation and Destruction V2.0. My first project for Burning Man
was called the Pillar of Creation and Destruction v 1.0, and we’re building on that concept to increase the scale
to exemplify the beauty in fire and destruction. The Fire Playground v1.0 will be a hands-on area with small
hands on poofers where the participants can fire the valves themselves (under supervision), and a demonstration
space. The demonstration space will feature the Pillar of Creation and Destruction 1.0 AND 2.0, as well as a
number of professionally built poofers and flame effects sequenced for electronic firing.

The Pillar of Creation and Destruction (v1.0 and 2.0)

The Pillar of Creation and Destruction 1.0 and 2.0 are liquid propane flamethrowers, pressurized using
the ambient propane pressure or nitrogen (V2.0). The design of each one is basically identical, other than scale
and pressure. The devices consist of a liquid propane tank with a siphon with in it, to draw the liquid up through
the valve and out. A secondary pressure tank exists as additional driving pressure, pushing the liquid from the
top of the tank to the siphon. The Pillar of Creation 1.0 created a column of fire nearly 100’ tall, and the Pillar
version 2 is expected to far exceed that.
