Recompression needs people to Ranger! Now that our Recomp is an official Burning Man sanctioned event it is time for us to develop our own pool of Rangers! Get your feet wet doing it at Recomp! It’s fun, it’s easy and you’ll be making a real contribution to the community. We need people to cover 4 hour shifts on Friday and Saturday nights. we’ll give you an abbreviated version of real Ranger training (but without the desert survival and USA law stuff) and lend you a radio for your shift. You get a chance to sample the experience without the big commitment! Curious? Try it out! To volunteer, contact rangers@recompression.com∞
What do you need in order to Ranger at Recompression 2008? Basically all you need is desire to help, a willingness to commit to doing a shift and showing up unaltered in any way, and a lot of common sense. There is no special training required to Ranger at Recomp although people with specialized training such as conflict resolution/mediation, counseling or first aid would be particularly welcome. Don't worry if you are new to the scene or you don't have any of these skills, we would still value your contribution. If you are less experienced and maybe a little unsure that Rangering is the thing for you but you still maybe want to help out, let me know and I will partner you up with one of our experienced Rangers.

I was fortunate to attend the Ontario Burner Nutopia event in May and they put on a training session that was both well attended and developed a couple of amazing rock star ranger and echelon staff for last years Burningman. We did have Ranger training available in the Pacific Northwest at Critically Massive last year that I also got the opportunity to attend so we do have some local training options. Having some training locally could both expand the pool of Rangers for other local events and may attract some people to Recompression that might not otherwise attend.
I threw out the idea to the Northwest ranger Council and we decided that it was better to do the regional training this year at the Oregon SOAK event. Last year the training was at Massive so maybe we can get it here for next year. So if you want to be a Ranger SOAK's probably the place to get training or on the playa before the event. We did decide to offer a workshop covering the art and craft of Rangering and maybe some of the highpoints from the ranger training such as active listening, change three things, and scenario role playing. (Not that kind of role playing get your mind out of the gutter.)
Let me know if you're interested in doing the Ranger 101 workshop so we can plan for this and get an estimate of the potential interest.

* Rangers - Deuce handled them very well & professionally. Nipper, Ian & Erin were all top-notch. All incidences were handled professionally and there was nothing that they/we could not handle. BRAVO!! Again, the radios helped a lot and kept everyone informed. Naeem said his experience was good (he was the young man who had the pre-existing condition and had to go to the hospital) so that says a LOT about the Medical/Rangers.

I'll be conducting the Ranges 101 Workshop sometime on Saturday I hope. Everyone is invited, whether you want to Ranger or not. Curiosity is the only prerequisit for the Ranger 101 workshop. And hey, you experienced Rangers are welcome to participate too. In fact I think it rocks good and hard when you are participating, adding your own experiences into the mix. There are also a billion ways to conduct this workshop. i can start it off but you will determine how we end up doing it.
I'll work with Deuce to set the time. I won't be at Elphinstone until Friday night, around 9pm, but I will be there to Ranger, talk and party. In the workshop we will concentrate on the ART of Rangering and some basic skills like radio talk, which is so easy once you get the hang of it....
Anyway, we will have fun and hold the space for this gathering of our loved community. Yeah I know, I sound like a hippy. It's all good.

We have excellent medical and harm reduction folks who are there to help and we are all part of one continuum of service. All Rangers work as part of a team and there are some great folks who will be participating on this years team.
So what do we need in terms of rangers, it would be great to have 8 to 10 folks who can commit a minimum of 4 to 6 hours on one or two days of the event. Friday night 8 pm to 12 midnight and 12 midnight to 6 am are key shifts. Go around to all the theme cabins, make friends and see how everybody is. Mostly you get to hang out at the Moose Lodge, maybe check out the chill space, the beach and the hot tub for the scenically inclined. Saturday night is the big night, where we need a good 6 people on for the burn 8 or 9 pm. to 12 (ish) and then it would be great to have a 10 pm to 4 am team and 12 midnight to 6 am shift. Dance in the Moose Lodge, drink lot's of water and make sure everybody else is drinking lots too. Friday and Saturday afternoon to early evening shifts are great, low stress and you get to go around and meet all the new happy campers, drop in on workshops and generally laze about and look cool.
Friday night at 7:30 pm (one hour before dinner) in the Harm Reduction Center
Saturday night at 6:00 pm (one hour before dinner) in the Harm Reduction Center
Just my initial thoughts on the ranger shift schedule. The main points of this schedule are that it provides a coverage of 6 people for Saturday night. The Saturday 10 pm - 4 am shift is the prime first aid and harm reduction shift and would likely be comprised of our best medical/harm reduction folks, backed up by the 6 pm - midnight and 8 pm to 2 am folks who will primarily be doing dirt rangering.
Friday day shift is to cover the gate, say hello to folks as they check in to their cabins and hang out in the dining hall and meet and greet. A nice walk down to the beach to watch the sunset or hang out in the dining hall ... its your choice.
Friday night shift(s) should be pretty chill and likely easy rangering. I expect the Friday night rangers will want to spend a lot of time checking out the groovy theme cabins and maybe a quiet moonlit walk down to the beach and the dock. If we have any gatecrashers they would likely happen Friday or Saturday evenings.
The Saturday afternoon shift should be pretty easy, have lunch, then maybe hang out at the gate with the greeters for a bit, walk though camp say hello to new arrivals and then chill down at the beach. This shift gives you lots of time to get back to camp, get changed and get to the dining hall for dinner.
The Saturday night shifts mucho fun and will be where all the action will be... things burning, checkin out the dance floor at the Moose Lodge, and hopefully a whole lot of fun going on... Remember... safety third !!
The Sunday shift could be dropped if we don't need the coverage or have the volunteers. My thoughts here was that this shift would be to support the lost and found, LNT and cabin monitor folks. We could make this shift begin and end earlier if whomever wanted to do this so desired. Imagine watching the sunrise at the beach and then doing a quick camp sweep for anything left behind that was incriminating, catching a quick breakfast and offering a cheery hello to all your fellow campers as they emerge bleary eyed from their previous nights revels.
Friday Noon 6 pm - 2 persons deuce on com as required - Gate, cabins, camp as required Dining Hall, dock and beach as required
Saturday 12 pm 6 am - 2 persons requitred - Burn, Moose Lodge, Theme Cabins, Chill Spaces Gate as required, Dock, beach, camp as required
A couple of rules. No one rangers alone. Ever ! If someone doesn't have a partner for some reason, then team up with another one of the shifts or find me and I'll find you a partner. Second, no one rangers altered in any way, shape or form. It is critical that we all share the same reality and no one gets hurt. If you can't abide by these two rules... don't ranger. ranger first... party later.
The BRC ranger manual is a beautiful introduction to the art and philosophy of rangering. Some of the material is playa specific but it gives a great insight to the structure, resources and organisation behind the Black Rock Rangers.
Many thanks to the great folks who helped out in 2006, Howler, Riffraff, Shadow, Glitterboy, Tripleshot, Ziptie, Mark, Nafun, Nurse Nipper, Jen, Loki, Cabana Boy, Bonnie, and our Burner Doc Ian, among others for making Recomp 2006 such a hit.
One of the things that made Recomp 2006 such a success was the absolutely seamless way rangers, harm reduction and medical worked together. You guys all rocked !!
We had our first organisers meeting last night and I threw out the idea at the meeting if there would there be any interest in doing the formal BM Org official authorised Ranger training at Recompression this year. There was unanimous support for this idea among the organisers and I have started this process of exploring this.
