If this is your first Recomp Announce, you can read previous ones on the
Communications∞ page online.
First: there are only 240 people on this email list & over 300 attending. That means YOU need to make sure this gets passed on to whoever you registered for, ok? Thanks!
Second: there will be a test. Well, ok, there won’t really, but the truth is that EVERYTHING in this document is of UTMOST importance to EVERYONE attending Recompression 2008. If you don’t read it all, & you ask any one of us some basic questions that you shoulda known from reading this, well.. I oughta!!! So that’s this is the test – radical self reliance. The more of you read this, the less work it is for the entire community on site, and the more fun we ALL have. So please respect your hard working volunteer organizers and READ THIS DOCUMENT!!!!
KIDS CAMP: Please remember that for most of the year, Camp Elphinstone is used by Children. Small people. Little ones. Most of the following rules should be observed with that in mind, please:
This is a LEAVE NO TRACE event. Look out for each other. Become familiar with the layout of the camp, and make sure you know where the Ranger HQ is, as this is the First Aid Station. The Dining Hall, aka Center Camp is where you will find all of the important information that you need to know. There will be site maps, camp & cabin layout, safety notices, workshop schedule, and volunteer callouts will be updated as needed. Any changes to the schedule will be posted here and communicated at mealtimes.
Every cabin must be left clean at the end of the weekend. This includes the following:
sweep floors, check under mattresses and beds for garbage/lost items, remove any staples or tacks, wipe up any liquid spills, take garbage and recycling over to dumpsters behind dining hall, be very sure the cabin is clean and ready for children to enter!
CIGARETTE SMOKING is only permitted outdoors IN DESIGNATED AREAS where you will find large cans as ashtrays. Cigarette smokers need to make sure their butts never hit the ground. If you smoke you should carry a personal ashtray. Please don’t make the kids pick up your butts & MOOP!
CENTER CAMP: The Dining Hall, aka Center Camp is where you will find all of the important information that you need to know. There will be site maps, camp & cabin layout, safety notices, workshop schedule, and volunteer callouts will be updated as needed. Any changes to the schedule will be posted here and communicated at mealtimes.
There is to be NO GLASS BOTTLES used in the public spaces. Please use cans or personal beverage containers for any beverages consumed. Please be respectful & place cans or any bottles in appropriate recycling bags, provided in each cabin.
NO ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES. EVERY PARTICIPANT is required to sign the
Recompression 2008 Waivers∞ before being granted access to the site. Copies will be provided for all at the Greeter Station and Site Gate, please be sure to read the waivers beforehand! This is very important and affects YOU.
TOILETS & SHOWERS: Say what? Well, folks, looks like the usual ‘Shower Hut’ shared by the cabins is totally out of commission! What are we gonna do!?!?! Ryan to the rescue! The camp has rented a portable shower unit with three showers, plus 6 porta potties (oh yay playa memories!). They will be arriving on Friday, so Thursday arrivals will have to use the lodge showers and/or the Ranger HQ shower.
FOOD / BEVERAGES: All meals are provided by the camp. It is against the camp rules for food to be kept in the cabins. Keep this in mind and do not leave any food mess behind. Absolutely no cooking in the cabins. Coffee and tea are available in the dining hall at all times. If you are bringing beverages, you may wish to bring a cooler and ice to keep them cold. Ice is not available on site.
Note for Vegetarians & folks with Special Diets: If you indicated that you have a food allergy or are vegan, your food may be available separately. See the kitchen staff.
We regret that pets are not allowed on site. There is to be no trespassing on the dock under any circumstances. That means that you are not allowed to step onto the dock at ANY TIME!
Registration & Event Schedule

What to Bring
For the full list of what to bring,
please see this page!∞ No need to make this email 20 pages long.
• Bring Your Ticket! Without it, we cannot let you in!
• Please identify ALL your belongings, just like at kids camp! It'll save us all time & effort! Use tape to mark, or string a tag onto items.
• Bring your OWN MUG & LABEL IT. We really need to NOT SEE ANY GLASS anywhere around camp. Don’t be responsible for cut open little kids’ feet in the summer!
• Bring your own PORTABLE ASHTRAY if you smoke! If we find ONE SINGLE butt on the ground, we will have to enforce extremely strict rules & that’ll really suck.
Ok, the rest of the list that you NEED TO READ is on the site,
go to it HERE!∞
NEW CALLOUTS
• Bring your ROLLER SKATES! That’s right, there’s going to be a roller disco but we need you to bring skates!

Getting to Camp Elphinstone can be broken up into three parts:
1. Getting to the Ferry Terminal at Horseshoe Bay, just North of downtown Vancouver
2. Boarding the ferry to Langdale (Sunshine Coast)
3. Getting from the Langdale Ferry terminal to Camp Elphinstone
1. Getting to the Ferry Terminal at Horseshoe Bay
By Transit:
It's also quite easy to get there on the bus from Vancouver. From Downtown Vancouver take either the 250 Horseshoe Bay or 257 Horseshoe Bay Express. Schedules and maps can be found on the
Translink website∞, enter "250" or "257" in the Route# and remember you are "westbound" going from Vancouver to Horseshoe Bay.
The distance from ferry to camp is approximately 1.5 kilometers (approx 1 mile) - a very short walk if you do not have a ride (20 minutes) - though if you keep your eyes peeled for burner types on the ferry you will have no problem catching a lift as burners are known to be friendly. Especially in mating season. Please see
walking to Camp Elphinstone∞ for a map.
Driving instructions from Vancouver
From downtown Vancouver, go west on Georgia Street, over the Lions Gate Bridge towards West Vancouver.
After you cross the bridge, stay to the left to follow the signs to Highway 1 Westbound (Upper Levels Highway), via Taylor Way, all the way to Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal.
The total estimated driving time from downtown Vancouver is 30 minutes depending on traffic conditions.
From East Vancouver, take Hwy 1 Westbound over the Second Narrows (Ironworkers Memorial) Bridge. Follow Hwy 1 to the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal.
Driving instructions from Seattle
If you're coming from the USA, please note that you do NOT want to go to the Tsawassen Ferry terminals closer to the border. You need to drive all the way into downtown Vancouver & head to the Horseshoe Bay terminal (approx 35 kms).
Directions from Seattle via Hwy 99 & the Peace Arch Border crossing (from the BC Ferries Website): note that going this way there are a lot of opportunities for wrong turns. Watch signs very very carefully.
I-5 North to the Canadian border, once in BC, I-5 becomes Highway 99
Follow Highway 99 North all the way into downtown Vancouver
Turn Left/West on Georgia Street, towards Stanley Park, but stay in the left lanes to take the causeway through Stanley Park towards the Lions Gate bridge – no time to take the scenic route into the park!
Cross the Lions Gate Bridge & follow signs to Highway 1 (Upper Levels Highway) via Taylor Way, to the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal
Take the Langdale Ferry
Directions from Seattle via the Pacific Highway Truck Crossing @ Blaine:
As you approach Canada, you will see signs directing you towards the Truck Crossing (Pacific Border Crossing)... go that way.
After you cross the border, go straight. You will be on 176th Street. Just stay on it - you'll go through a lot of farmland, about 10 miles. Eventually you will come to Highway 1. There will be other signs for other highways heading to Vancouver. Don't be fooled.
Get on Highway 1 heading West, towards Vancouver. You will now stay on this freeway all the way to the ferry (it will be called the Upper Levels Highway later on)
You will come to the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal - Take the Langdale Ferry
* Total time from the border: about 1 hour if traffic is light
Directions from USA via Lynden/Aldergrove crossing:
Listen to your radio... if you hear that the Peace Arch crossing and the Pacific Hwy (truck) crossing are very busy, but the Lynden/Aldergrove crossing is not, then going this way can save you some time.
1. From the I-5, take the Bellis Fair Mall/Meridian St. exit and head North on Meridian St.
2. Follow North, through border crossing. Continue North about 8 miles, on 264th St.
3. Get on Highway 1 heading West, towards Vancouver. You will now stay on this freeway all the way to the ferry (it will be called the Upper Levels Highway later on)
4. You will come to the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal - take the Langdale Ferry
2. From Horseshoe Bay to Langdale (Sunshine Coast)
You will be taking the
Langdale Ferry from Horseshoe Bay∞ which has a crossing time of 40 minutes. Note: you won't have to pay on the way back.
TO CAMP! Leave Horseshoe Bay RETURN: Leave Langdale
7:20 am 3:30 pm 6:20 am 2:30 pm
9:20 am 5:30 pm 8:20 am 4:30 pm
11:20 am 7:25 pm 10:20 am 6:30 pm
1:20 pm 9:15 pm 12:20 pm 8:20 PM
Fares are collected only on the Horseshoe Bay side and are for a round trip. Please confirm all sailing times, fares and restriction at the BC Ferries web site. You may also reserve a place on the ferry for a fee, only 25-50% of the vessel can be reserved. This just means that you need to arrive early to make sure to get on. The ferry ride is a great time to remember all the things you forgot.
Ticket sales will end five minutes before the scheduled sailing time for vehicles and for walk-on passengers. Cash, Visa, Mastercard and American Express accepted. Debit Cards cannot be used for payment of fares at this time.
Note: DO NOT plan on leaving your car at Horseshoe Bay to walk on to the ferry, as that'll cost you at least $20 in parking fees! If you are walking on or bussing it, let us know which ferry you are taking and we can try to arrange for a ride from the terminal to the camp. Contact greeters@recompression.com to arrange.
3. From Langdale to Camp Elphinstone
After you get off the ferry, all the cars will drive up the hill. Take a right at the first light.
Watch for the YMCA Road sign on the right. Turn right on YMCA Road and follow it. It's not far.
Drive through the gates, past the parking lot and lodges on your right, and stay on the road until it curves to the right and ends at the main parking lot. There will be a greeter station at which you will be asked to confirm your registration & sign the Recompression 2008 Waivers (pdf format) - parking is restricted and parking on the roadway will result in the towing of your vehicle without notice - adequate parking is available in the upper parking lot after you have unloaded your gear.
The total distance from the ferry terminal is less than 3 miles.
